History

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

In the Beginning…

Founded by Mona and Herbert Hyman, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf opened its first store in Los Angeles, Brentwood, September 1963. Their passion for excellence and quality inherently made them the founding fathers of gourmet coffee in California. Since then, the company has grown to be one of the world’s largest privately-owned coffee and tea companies.

Since 1963, the company continues to search the earth for the finest and rarest loose-leaf teas and premium coffees, offering over 22 varieties of coffee and 20 kinds of tea. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf also works hard to build relationships with individual farms and estates so that they are assured of the best coffee and tea harvests available. Coffee is roasted fresh daily in small batches in a manual European roast style, then packed using state-of-the-art equipment for shipment in our own roasting facility and delivered fresh daily to their stores.

Reaching Asia

In 1998, the company was taken global by Singaporean entrepreneurs, Sunny and Victor Sassoon, as well as their friend and business associate, Severin Wunderman. Within two years, the company had over 29 outlets in Asia – mainly Singapore and Malaysia, of which was almost as many as there was in America. After which, the Sassoon’s bought over the company and to this date, the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has over 830 stores in 23 different countries.

The endurance and popularity of The Bean, as it is affectionately referred to by devotees, can be attributed to the high standards that were established from the beginning. From trend-setting drinks like the World Famous Ice Blended, to the employees who become a part of the communities they work in, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has discovered the formula for a successful coffee and tea company. Worldwide, over 20,000 Ice Blended drinks are served daily and over 7 million annually.

Free Wi-Fi access is offered at most locations. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is an international chain with locations in Australia, Brunei, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel, South Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.
